WEAVERVILLE NEWS | LOCAL REPORTING · 2026

A plan that could eventually connect approximately 200 East Weaver Creek households to centralized wastewater treatment received state funding for feasibility and planning in April 2026. The State Water Resources Control Board filed an official notice April 24 identifying the Weaverville Sanitary District as the project agency.

The problem officials want to examine

The state describes approximately 200 homes in the East Weaver Creek area that currently rely on failing onsite septic systems. A centralized sewer connection could offer an alternative, but the exact engineering design, environmental effects, project cost and household connection process still need to be determined. The state filing recognizes the need for further evaluation rather than announcing immediate construction.

What was actually funded

The State Water Board says it approved the planning-stage project April 21, 2026. The current work covers feasibility studies and collecting information needed to plan a future extension of the sanitary district’s existing collection and treatment system. The state assigned project number 8826-110 and applied environmental exemptions for information collection and feasibility studies.

What remains before anyone connects

Construction would require a viable design, cost estimates, funding and whatever permits and approvals the future project needs. The official notice does not list a connection charge, guarantee that each of the 200 homes will participate, or identify a date when sewer service begins. Residents should not cancel septic maintenance or arrange private work based on a planning notice.

How residents can follow the process

Weaverville Sanitary District is the local project contact, with General Manager James Cloud named in the state record. Residents can ask for public study results, proposed service boundaries, alternatives to extending the network, and opportunities to review eventual assessments or rate impacts. Weaverville News will distinguish the funded study from future approvals and completed pipe installation.
